Crackdown on Meth Manufacturing

The next time you want to purchase cold medication it could be a little bit harder.

Sen. Patty Birkholz and Rep. Rick Jones are sponsoring legislation that would require all products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine as the sole active ingredient to be stored behind store counters. The bill also requires the customer to show valid identification and sign a log book indicating the amount purchased.

Pseudoephedrine is a popular ingredient in many over-the-counter drugs such as Sudafed. It's also a main component in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Birkholz and Jones said they hope the law would helpcrack down on meth manufacturing.

Law breakers could face up to two years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
