Nathan VanPelt was sleeping inside of the duplex he rents on Burcham Drive when all of a sudden a loud explosion woke him up. He looked out of his window and saw smoke and a number of East Lansing Police officers. Two more explosions followed, all three from homemade MacGyver bombs. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad detonated one with a pellet gun and two exploded on their own.
It happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday near two schools, a day care center, and a full block of student housing. The bombs, made in a plastic bottle with tinfoil and household chemicals, were found outside of 1510 Burcham Drive. Police don't know who made them or put them there. They've questioned the people who live inside of the student rented duplex and Captain Juli Liebler, of the East Lansing Police Department, says there may have been visitors at the home.
No one was hurt. Evidence was collected from inside of the West portion of the duplex and it will be analyzed to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
