Gov. John Engler has signed a series of bills that will give Michigan nursing students up to $16,000.

Under the legislation, nursing students can get up to $4,000 a year for four years to help pay for tuition and other expenses. In exchange for the scholarships, when students become nurses, they must work at a Michigan facility for at least one year for each year of the scholarship.

The governor says the bills address a critical nursing shortage in Michigan.
