Meridian Township Budget Crunch

For every one police officer in Meridian Township there are 931 people.

That ratio is more than twice as high versus Lansing and higher than East Lansing’s ratio of one officer per 705 people. But a recently approved budget threatens to make the township’s ratio even less favorable.

By approving the budget, township officials elected to eliminate one police job, a firefighter and two clerical positions. The township is not firing anyone, but instead choosing not to fill empty positions or retirements.

The move will save the township more than 180,000.

Trustees say the cuts were the best option to help their financial position.
