The Pere Marquette 1225 isn't officially "The Polar Express," but if you visit this season, you won't be able to tell the difference. The movie's train was designed with its blueprints, sounds, and even some of its old train schedules and light bulbs, digitally animated to create the realistic images.
The real train is still running in Owosso at the Steam Railroading Institute. It once sat on MSU's campus, but it was moved and put back into use in 1980. The director of the institute served as technical director for the film.
To visit, go to their Web site at www.mstrp.com.
The movie is playing on regular screens all over the area and on IMAX in Lansing at Celebration Cinema. The IMAX version is 3-D.
