The Greater Lansing Housing Coalition said Tuesday it expects to receive a $1.1 million grant to help eliminate substandard housing in Lansing. The money will go toward refurbishing and rebuilding 20-30 properties in the Baker neighborhood. The remodeled houses will then be sold to low and moderate-income families.
The coalition has fixed up more than 100 houses in the Lansing area. The grant is expected to be received by Christmas. The project will likely take about five years.
People living in the area said neighborhood beautification not only helps reduce crime, it also helps the economy.
