More than 100 guardsmen from the F-238 aviation unit based in Grand Ledge will leave Monday morning for active duty. Their first stop is Wisconsin for training before heading to Iraq for a 12-month tour.
This is the first deployment for most of the troops more than a year and a half after the war began.
"I don't want to go. No one really probably wants to go, but coming from a military family I know that someone's got to it and I guess I signed up for it," Specialist Tanisha Horton says.
The unit will work on aircraft maintenance overseas. Another 300 guards are expected to be deployed in the next two months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
