Now that local malls are adorned with gold ribbons, white lights and even old Saint Nick himself, merchants are hoping Santa brings more than just holiday cheer.
Charles Ballard, professor of economics at Michigan State University, says many businesses make one-third or more of their revenue from the holiday season. But, he says, whether shoppers are lured by fancy decorations and holiday music is up to the buyer.
Many people shopping Saturday already found themselves spending more than they had planned. Others say it's too early for holiday decorations and Christmas shopping.
