An e-mail sent to WILX Friday afternoon announced health care professionals at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing would be voting on a potential work stoppage, but should the vote be approved, that doesn't mean a work stoppage will happen, just that the union has approved one should it be needed.

The current contract expired on Halloween.

Issues still being debated at the bargaining table include the number of patients nurses are required to care for, wages, health benefits and workplace health and safety issues.

Jessica Salazar, labor representative for the Michigan Nurses Association at Sparrow, says it's unfortunate it has come to this point.

Lorri Rishar, spokesperson for Sparrow, says they have an excellent 16-year history with the MNA and looks forward to a positive outcome in negotiations.

The voting is being done by mail ballots. Results are expected to be announced November 15. Should a strike take place, law requires the union to first give management a 10-day notice.
