Michigan's prison education program has a new director.
Julie DeRose says there's an ongoing need to find good, qualified teachers for the program. She's focusing on recruiting instructors to teach the 12,000 inmates enrolled in the program.
DeRose oversees the program's $40 million annual budget and staff of about 350.
DeRose is helping to develop a program that eases prisoners' re-entry into communities. She also wants to develop computer-aided instruction in the classroom and streamline the prison program so inmates don't fall behind when they transfer from facility to facility.
