Are Mechanics Ready for Hybrid Cars?

GM and Daimler Chrysler announce a partnership to research gas-electric hybrid technology, pledging to join in in coming years.

Toyota Prius was the first hybrid, and it is still a novelty. Spartan Toyota's Trish Green says they deliver five to eight a month, and there is a backlog among 90 names long.

But the hybrid technology is complex, combining a gas engine and an electric engine. Mechanics aren't trained in the electrical aspects, and even Spartan Toyota only has one who is trained to service the Prius.

Lansing Community College is ready for the change. Their new west campus features an advanced car repair center. They'll integrate the Prius into their regular curriculum beginning in this January semester. They're also planning for the future with classes in hydrogen technology.
