Billionaire Amway co-founder Jay Van Andel has died at the age of 80. Amway parent company Alticor says he died Tuesday at his home in Ada, just east of Grand Rapids

Michigan Republican Party chief Greg McNeilly says Van Andel was someone who championed conservatism and capitalism. He also says Van Andel was one of Michigan's leading philanthropists.

Van Andel had Parkinson's disease, but the cause of his death isn't known at this time.

Much of Van Andel's giving went toward Christian causes. He also reshaped his hometown of Grand Rapids over the years.

Richard DeVos co-founded Amway with Van Andel.
