Longshoremen Lockout Hits Home

A lockout of West Coast port workers has many retailers and manufacturers across the nation on edge.

If the lockout continues, officials from the Michigan Retailers Association say it could mean a devastating blow to the holiday season.

Officials from the Michigan Manufacturers Association also are watching closely how the events out west unfold.

The Pacific Maritime Association, which represents shipping companies, has locked out more than 10,000 members of the longshoremen's union. It claims the dockworkers engaged in a slowdown late last month.

The MRA says every second the lockout continues, more goods are stacking up, adding retailers are shortening up inventory lines as they gear up for the most important selling season of the year. A loss of merchandise could mean a loss of jobs.
