Newspaper Endorsements Reflect Split Electorate

"Our editorial department is completely separate from our newsroom," says Mark Nixon, editorial editor for the Lansing State Journal.

He and a committee of eight other executives and editors from the LSJ chose to endorse Kerry in Sunday's paper. That decision is based on studying the candidates’ records, and voting among themselves. Nixon says they do not always agree on the endorsements, but they write editorials to reflect their majority opinion. Each vote becomes one editorial, one voice for the paper.

This year, the Lansing State Journal endorsed Kerry, as did The Detroit Free Press, the Muskegon Chronicle, and the Flint Journal. The Grand Rapids Press endorsed Bush. The Detroit News endorsed "None of the Above."
