A cargo plane from Chicago has landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after losing an engine over Lake Michigan.

Federal Aviation Administration officials in Chicago say a Kalitta Air jet took off from O'Hare International Airport late last night. It was bound for New York when it reported mechanical problems with one of its engines.

The Boeing 747-100 was diverted to Romulus, where it landed without incident. No one was hurt.

After the landing, officials discovered the engine wasn't just malfunctioning, but completely gone. FAA officials say Michigan authorities are searching for the engine.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
