Several Police agencies received calls Tuesday night about a woman walking along Interstate 96 near US 127. When an Ingham County Sheriff's Deputy went searching for her, he struck her with his vehicle.
Apparently, 34-year-old Tina Marie Potter of Ludington walked into traffic. It was dark and rainy, and the force from Deputy Robert McElmurray's police vehicle killed her instantly. Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says they don't know why Potter was in the area or why she was wondering along the freeway.
Michigan State Police are investigating the accident, and Lt. Gary Nix says there's nothing to suggest Deputy McElmurray was traveling at excessive speed. Once the investigation is complete, the report will be turned over to the Ingham County Prosecutor. The Prosecutor will decide if any charges will be filed.
