European GM Workers Protest

Thousands of General Motors employees at its European factories are staging protests to fight what they call “bad management.”

They're upset over the automaker's plan to slash 12,000 jobs across the continent.

Workers at an Opel plant in West Germany fear they will be the worst hit.

They have stayed off the job since GM announced its plans last Thursday. They say they won't return to work unless they get assurances that no one will be fired.

Meanwhile a shortage of parts from the striking German plant has forced two other factories to shutdown.

GM says it must reduce overhead to cope with sluggish demand and increased competition from Japanese and other European carmakers.
