Nurses' Aides Shortage in Nursing Homes

The newspaper's study reports thousands of patients are not getting the care they need at nursing homes due to a shortage in certified nurses' aides.

But local experts say this data is not conclusive, and many times, elderly patients face malnutrition and dehydration as a part of aging, especially when they have multiple medical problems.

Michigan is also one of a few states that require a specific aid to patient ratio. This prevents workers from getting too busy to feed or bathe patients.
