Vermontville Township firefighters arrived at a house fire at 5980 Hager Road just after 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night. The state fire marshal’s office spent hours on the scene Wednesday morning, looking for clues as to what started the fire. Investigators are not ruling out the possibility of a meth lab explosion, but at this time have not been able to determine the cause of the fire. They do know, however, that it started in the garage.
Both residents in the home, Zack Histed, and Billie Jo Cousins, were able to escape safely. The home is a total loss. The Eaton County Sheriff's Department was able to confirm Billie Jo Cousins was arrested in August, on a meth-related charge, at from a different location. Her case is still pending.
The state fire marshal’s office will determine whether or not it will further test the home.
