Saturday's game against Illinois is an early one, so students will only notice some of the new MSU tailgate rules. The rule limiting the time they can tailgate to five hours is null and void because 7 a.m., the normal time tailgates begin, is also five hours before kickoff.
Instead, the main focus will be preventing tailgaters from playing drinking games. Game structures like drinking wheels and ping pong tables won't be allowed near the tennis courts. There will not be increased patrols, but police plan to enforce the banned items strictly.
Some students we spoke to today say police won't catch everyone. They expect there will be rule breakers, even though most of campus is aware of the ban and its consequences.
