By a vote of eight to 117, Delta Dental employees of the Local UAW 724 turned down a proposed working contract by management. By turning down the vote, union members also authorized a strike to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The votes were taken during two separate meetings on Wednesday. The union delayed the vote one day to discuss and consider numerous items in the proposed contract. The second of the two meetings started 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the vote taking place just after 10:30 p.m. The final vote count of the two combined meetings was met with loud applause.
Eight members voted to accept the contract, and one worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said they knew of at least three workers who would be crossing the picket line and returning to work.
On, the flip side, the 724 Union president says this is the most united unit he's ever seen. Also, representatives from Delta Dental tell News Ten they are prepared to handle the responsibilities of the striking workers.
The walk-out is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.
