Give Michigan Soldiers a Gift

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Attorney General Mike Cox are asking for donations to buy holiday gifts for Michigan soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The “Support MI Troops” fund-raising campaign began Tuesday and will continue through Veteran's Day on Nov. 11. Donations will be accepted by the Michigan Chamber Foundation.

Money raised will go toward gifts requested by Michigan troops, including sports apparel, DVDs, electronics, hardware, office supplies and nonperishable food, to arrive in time for Christmas.

“It will mean the world to receive a package from home around the holidays when you are halfway around the world, far away from our loved ones and everything that is familiar,” the Democratic governor said at a news conference Tuesday in the state Capitol.

Cox, a former Marine, said he knows how much it means to get a package from home. “Our men and women abroad need to know that we remember them, that we honor their sacrifice, and that we are forever indebted for their service,” the Republican attorney general said.
