Detroit 4th of July Shooting Charges Dropped

A prosecutor says she is dropping murder charges against a man accused of opening fire during Detroit's Freedom Festival fireworks show in June, killing one man.

Nine people were hit by gunfire at the June 23 show, and 48-year-old Donald Murphy died six weeks later.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says she still considers 32-year-old Daron Caldwell the suspect in the shootings. But she says evidence is insufficient to continue pressing charges against him.

Worthy says DNA analysis conducted on items found at the scene didn't match him.

Caldwell is being released from jail later Monday. He was awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge.
