Pope Beatifies Candidates for Sainthood

Pope John Paul II read the words that beautified five candidates. This is the last step taken before they become saints.

Monsignor George Michaelek of St. Mary's Cathedral in Lansing says this gives Catholics further encouragement to stay faithful to Catholicism even in trying times. He says this Pope has canonized more saints than ever before and this is a step in the right direction for the future of the church.

Of the five beatified, one controversial candidate is German nun Anna Katharina Emmerick. Emmerick's visions are said to have inspired scenes from the film "The Passion of the Christ."
