Patience Means Better Pumpkin

Stores and farms across Michigan are offering pumpkins for sale as Halloween approaches. But with the holiday still six weeks away, experts suggest exercising a little pumpkin patience.

Hannah Stevens is a Michigan State University Extension horticultural agent in Macomb County. She says that while a properly cured pumpkin will last as long as two months if stored at 50 to 55 degrees, they are better later in the season. So, she recommends waiting as long as possible and buying locally.

Pumpkins are in shorter supply this fall because of the wet and cold beginning to the growing season in May.
