Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center's new Semi-Independent Living facility is days away from being completed.
"There's another program that has a semi-independent living apartment program," says Director of Rehabiliation Services Tammy Westfall. "But a lot of them are more Detroit or Grand Rapids. So in the Lansing area it's definitely a need for the community."
Construction on the six unit facilty started in the spring. It's the second building to be added to Origami since it opened in 1997.
"This gives that middle ground to where there's more opportunity to do things for themselves," explains Eric Hannah, Director of Program Operations.
The apartments are for those who've suffered a traumatic brain injury, but no longer need 24-hour support. Instead, patients living in the Mason facility will have five hours or less of assistance.
"Whether it may be support in activities of daily living, like bathing or grooming or getting dressed or more of the advanced activities of daily living, such as you medication management," Westfall explains.
Adds Hannah, "It's critical to go from intensive rehab or 24 hour supervision and moving back into the community where there's a lot of outside stimulation."
All of the units are handicapped accessible -- with 32 inch countertops and front controlled appliances. A grand opening is scheduled for Friday, October 12th at 3pm. Tours of the facility will be available. For more information contact (517) 336-6060.
