The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a probe in November to determine whether the Ford Crown Victoria’s gas tank is vulnerable to rupture in high-speed collisions.
The Michigan State Police is one of agencies responsible for evaluating such vehicles, and Lieutenant David Halliday says there are many factors in finding fault with a vehicle.
While Lt. Halliday would not comment directly on the investigation he did suggest that vehicle modifications could be a factor in collisions resulting in fuel igniting into flames.
Ford Motor denies having any design flaws in the car and in the gas tank. The investigation is ongoing.
