Comedian Jerry Lewis testified in Washington Tuesday to support a bill sponsored by Michigan Congressman Mike Rogers.

The Brighton Republican's bill would establish six regional pain research and care centers run by the National Institutes of Health. It would cost about $60 million.

Lewis says he once was in so much pain that he regularly contemplated suicide. He says a pain pacemaker implanted in 2002 now enables him to trigger electronic impulses through his spine to his brain that eliminate the pain.

Lewis says pain management is a science that is emerging from its infancy and needs support.
