General Motors Corp. Chief Executive Richard Wagoner said the auto maker has no definite plans to trim its labor force in the coming months. Still, the company will need to find ways to drive costs out of its manufacturing process.
Wagoner, speaking at a media event to launch the new Pontiac G6, said the automaker will continue to try to find ways to work with suppliers to cut part prices. Also, GM likely will look for ways to consolidate business units. Labor costs for GM and the other domestic automakers tend to be higher than their foreign competitors.
“We're trying to attack this a little more systematically,” Wagoner said.
Wagoner also praised Pontiac management for its marketing efforts through “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” The car maker gave away 276 new Pontiac G6 sedans on the show's season premiere, which aired Monday. The promotion cost GM about $7 million, roughly equal to what it spent advertising a GMC truck during the Olympics.
