Dr. Dennis Perry at Meridian Primary Care in Okemos says a new adenovirus that causes conjunctivitis (pink eye) is going around this week.

The symptoms Dr. Perry is treating are: low-grade fever, runny eyes, and maybe a little cough and a stuffy nose or sore throat.

To treat conjunctivitis, cleanse the eyes to prevent the condition from spreading.

You can relieve discomfort by applying a warm compress for five to 10 minutes, three to four times a day.

It's also important to rest. You can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for fever control.

Pink eye will clear up on its own within seven to 10 days.
You don't need eye drops, or antibiotics.
If crusty, gunky stuff starts coming out of the eye, you should see a doctor.
