"Wheels when you want them." That's the slogan of Zipcar --- the popular nationwide car-sharing service now on the campus of Michigan State University.
Starting next week, people can rent a car for an hour, a day, a weekend, all for a small fee.
Students will soon have a new option for getting to class. Zipcars. They're not exactly new ---- more than 200 universities have them parked on their property but for MSU, it will be a first.
"There [will be] six cars on campus. Three will be the Prius, which are hybrids and other three will be Ford Escapes," said the Jennifer Battle, assistant director for campus sustainability. "All six will be fuel efficient with different sizes to offer different utility for people to use service."
If you don't have a car, if you're in a pinch, if you're tired of taking the bus, oryou just want to drive a hybrid vehicle; for a few dollars a day, or an hour, you can have a zipcar.
"People can call in for a zipcar. They can reserve it online, use an app on their phone --- there are multiple ways to get a zipcar and the rates are $8/hr a day on a weekday, $9/hr on weekend and I think $66/day for rental," said Battle.
The process is pretty easy. Once you make your reservation, you go to car's designated spot on campus, swipe your card over the windshield, the doors unlock, the keys are inside and you're good to go.
"[Our goal is to] reduce the amount of cars on campus encourage more sustainable ways to get around campus and benefit the community," said Battle.
Gas, insurance and up to 180 miles per day are all included when you sign up. Depending on the popularity, MSU could add more vehicles. The wheels hit the road starting next week.
Anyone can sign up. The cars will be parked on campus and MSU students, staff and faculty will get a discounted rate, but anyone and everyone is encouraged to sign up. Zipcar regulates all use. The company leases the spaces on campus and are in charge of all fees and vehicle maintenance.
