They're forming in neighborhoods and in the halls of large corporations. Called "Green Teams," they are helping to promote environmental awareness. They identify ways to make their homes, offices even manufacturing facilities more eco-friendly.
Dave Haft, Frito Lay: "I think when you think of Green Teams in Frito Lay manufacturing plants you think of a highly engaged group of individuals that have a passion for the environment. They are engaging other employees, they are championing these ideas."
Frito Lay has reduced water usage by 39 percent, gas usage by 30 percent and electricity usage by 22 percent per pound of product produced, compared to 1999. And they have implemented a zero landfill initiative with the goal of reducing waste to less then 1 percent. Many company practices are the result of work by an employee Green Team.
Green Teams can propose an action, like reducing the amount of energy needed to make a product. Estimate the benefit in terms of cost and resource savings. Then track and report the benefits. Both for the company, and themselves.
