A new project is turning landfill gas into a source of electrical power in Bay County.
Officials from Phoenix-based landfill owner Republic Services Inc., Lansing-based Granger and Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp.'s Consumers Energy are working together on the project at Whitefeather Landfill in Pinconning Township.
A dedication ceremony was scheduled for Thursday and public tours are Saturday.
Construction began last summer on the project, which captures landfill gas that is converted to electricity at Granger's onsite plant.
Whitefeather, located about 110 miles north-northwest of Detroit, is the 10th of Republic's 15 landfills in Michigan with a gas-to-energy facility. Republic says the energy produced will be enough to power nearly 2,000 homes.
