Solving the problem of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change will require global action . That's the growing consensus among climate scientists, economists and policy makers. A report by McKinsey and Company outlines how.
The report is called "A Pathway to a Low Carbon Economy." The study shows that if we use current technology to its fullest around the world, we could dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. These technologies could offer savings to consumers and create thousands of new, green-collar jobs. The report covers proposals like increasing the number of plug-in hybrid cars, energy efficiency measures, and expanded renewable energy generation.
McKinsey admits this will be a major challenge requiring global commitment and strong policies. Time is of the essence.
Stephen Schneider, Stanford University: "Now it's time to move. We've got the political will. We've got international groups that want to do it with us. It's an historic opportunity to make a difference in the legacy that we leave to our children, our grandchildren, and the rest of nature."
