Green Jobs Shrinking

Wind power has been around for centuries, but with today's energy and environmental concerns, its popularity is rising fast.

At record rates, actually. According to the American Wind Energy Association, wind turbine installations jumped 50 percent just last year. That's a record number and it gives us enough capacity to power nearly 7 million homes. The trade group says all these installations created about 35,000 new jobs.

But for all that growth, the wind industry hasn't escaped the tough economy. Turbine maker Clipper Windpower has laid off 90 workers in one manufacturing plant and LM Glasfiber, a maker of turbine blades, is laying off 150 workers at one of its two plants.

Still, President Obama's call for more support of renewable energy production is a sign that the new administration sees clean-energy as a priority for the nation.
