Auditing Your Impact

When you look back at the last year, what steps did you take to reduce your environmental impact? How did you do? Companies are evaluating their own performance.

PepsiCo recently announced that it has made significant progress toward its long-term environmental sustainability goals, which include reducing water consumption by 20%, electricity consumption by 20% and fuel consumption by 25% per unit of production by 2015 compared to 2006.

Starbucks announced thirteen eco-friendly initiatives as part of its Shared Planet program. Goals include making 100 percent of cups to be reusable or recyclable and conserving water and energy and promoting forest conservation. They hope to achieve these goals by 2015.

You can lead by example by supporting eco-friendly businesses and taking simple steps like reducing your paper use, switch to energy efficient CFL light bulbs and turn down your thermostat and opt for a sweater made from recycled materials.
