Help Your Wallet, Help The Environment

Many Americans are feeling squeezed because of the economy. The good news is, taking care of the environment often helps save money. Here are a few simple ways to live a little greener, while keeping the green in your pocket.

Just about everything with a power adaptor or stand-by function draws power when not in use. It's called "phantom power" and combined it sucks around 8 gigawatts of power every year across the world. So unplug those devices when not in use.

And check out what steps companies are taking. Starbucks's Grounds for Your Garden program offers free spent coffee grounds to customers on a first come basis - perfect for adding nitrogen to your garden.

As the holidays approach, instead of using brand new boxes to wrap and ship your gifts - try reusing containers to cut costs and care for the environment.

During World War II, Americans lived by the adage: Use It All; Wear It Out; Make It Do; or Go Without. It just might be timely advice as we ride this latest economic roller coaster to greener pastures. I'm Jill Cordes. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
