America the Beautiful. It’s not just a song, it’s a rich statement about where we live and it’s up to us to keep it that way. Many people are doing just that and seeing the country at the same time. It’s called VolunTourism.
Growing numbers of people and families are adding environmental stewardship to their vacations by visiting local and national parks to help clean them up. TakePride.gov has a great resource for finding volunteer vacations, including family-friendly options on their VolunTourism page.
Take Pride in America volunteers can apply for VolunTourism grants provided by Travelocity.
But you don’t have to travel far to find volunteer opportunities. Start in your own neighborhood by picking up trash from streets and parks once a month. Or join a group that does nearby trail and campground maintenance or native plant restoration.
As Take Pride in America’s motto says, “It’s Your Land, Lend a Hand.” And You'll also get to get outdoors, meet some new people and of course keep America beautiful.
