More and more companies are creating positions to address environmental concerns and to cut costs. These employees are sometimes called Sustainability Officers, Green Officers or even Green Teams and can be found in companies like the Hilton Head Corporation and Frito-Lay.

Among other responsibilities, Green Officers or teams find ways for their companies to become more energy-efficient and save money by reducing energy and water use, follow U.S. Green Building Council standards, and encourage green work practices.

Universities are expanding their curriculums to include green-minded courses across a variety of disciplines. Two years ago, Yale University began offering a joint master's degree in sustainable design at its architecture school and School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
