EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman center Allyssa DeHaan (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) has been tested all season long, playing against some of the best college centers in the game, including LSU's Sylvia Fowles and Maryland's Crystal Langhorne. On Sunday afternoon, those early trials had her well-prepared for two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Jessica Davenport, as the 6-9 rookie scored 25 points, blocked five shots and added eight rebounds to lead the Michigan State women's basketball team to an upset of No. 4/5 Ohio State, 62-59. DeHaan's performance has been rewarded by the Big Ten Conference office, as the league announced on Monday afternoon that DeHaan is the Big Ten's Co-Player of the Week, along with Purdue's Katie Gearlds. DeHaan averaged 18.5 points, seven rebounds and four blocks per game as she led the Spartans (21-6 overall, 12-2 Big Ten) to two wins last week. She started the week by scoring 12 points, eight in the second half to hold off a late rally by the Wildcats, and grabbing six rebounds off the bench on Thursday night. She surpassed 300 points on the season in the game, becoming just the sixth freshman in MSU history to reach that mark. Reentering the starting lineup for the first time in five games at Ohio State, DeHaan outshined two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Jessica Davenport, posting 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting and rejecting five shots, three from Davenport. The 6-9 Grandville, Mich., native passed Davenport's 2004-05 total of 116 shots in the process to move into third in the Big Ten single-season record book with 118 rejections and became just the fourth player in MSU history to reach 300 points and 200 rebounds in their freshman season. DeHaan took over the game against Ohio State in the final minute, scoring the go-ahead bucket for MSU's first lead with 47 seconds left on a turnaround jumper, 57-56, then putting back the go-ahead bucket with 20 seconds left to help MSU take the lead for good. DeHaan added two free throws with 1.7 seconds left to cement the win. The Spartans get back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Illinois for an 8 p.m. Big Ten contest.
