World Refugee Awareness Week began today in Lansing with a family 5-K fun run.
The event was put on by St. Vincent Catholic Charities and is the first ever in honor of refugees around the world who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution and violence. More than 100 people were out today to show their support. Organizers said Sunday that the 5-k is just one of many ways people can help out.
"There are various volunteer opportunities," said Marissa Nalley, the community outreach coordinator for refugee services. "Donating items today, that's a great one, because we do provide housing to all our new refugees and we do furnish those through donations."
There are events happening all week, including a movie night at the Capital Area District Libraries.
