With a new map, Ingham County now has 14 districts instead of 16 in order to save money.
"It saves about $25,000 to $30,000 per year and a quarter million over the next decade," said Eric Shertzing, the Ingham County treasurer.
Eliminating two districts required new lines to be drawn based on distributing the population evenly, and minimizing breaks between jurisdications and voter precincts.
"With respect to those three factors, Plan C clearly was more in accord with the statutory requirements than any other plans," said Ingham County prosecutor Stuart Dunnings.
So the commission approved the plan submitted by the county prosecutor. But, the odd shape of the new District 7 raises some question.
A half mile on Dell Road connects the northwest portion of District 7 to the rest of the district, creating some political stirr.
"It brings in more of South Lansing which is a more heavily democratic area into the Delhi and Holt suburban areas making it more democratic leaning," said Ingham County Republican Party chair Linda Lee Tarver. "We call that gerimandering."
The two final maps consided were never posted on the county website for public input.
"The public has not seen these maps. The people here just got these maps as of noon on Friday," said Vince Dragonetti, an Ingham County commissioner.
But the commission says their final plan complies with most public comments to keep communities together. Anyone who disagrees with the plan has 20 days to file an appeal.
