JACKSON, Mich. (AP) -- The once-swanky Hayes Hotel in Jackson was the site for wedding receptions, social events and banquets. Many danced the night away in the ballrooms or enjoyed drink cocktails in the Drum Room.
That all changed in 1975 when the hotel closed and the building became part of Consumers Energy's headquarters. It has been vacant since 2003 when Consumers moved to a new home.
Now there's hope the Hayes can be restored.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports developers are negotiating with the city to renovate the building for office and retail space.
The hotel was named after local industrialist Clarence B. Hayes. His great-granddaughter Mary Calder says she'd like to see the building's character preserved as much as possible.
