A CBS News employee has been indicted in an extortion plot against David Letterman.
The talk show host last night admitted to his audience that he'd had sexual relationships with female staffers on his show.
Prosecutors say that information had been used to try to blackmail Letterman for $2 million.
Robert Halderman is a producer for the true-crime show "48 Hours." Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau says Halderman was arrested yesterday and indicted on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny. It carries a penalty of five to 15 years in prison.
Prosecutors say Halderman left a letter and other material for Letterman last month. The letter said that Letterman's world would "collapse around him" when information about his private life was disclosed.
After meeting with Halderman, prosecutors say, Letterman's attorney took the case to the prosecutor's office, which set up an undercover sting at a hotel. They say police were in an adjoining room with recording equipment.
