The fight for the South in the GOP nomination contest remains close, but early returns are favoring Rick Santorum in Alabama and Mississippi.
With about a quarter of the precincts reporting in Alabama, Santorum has 35 percent, Newt Gingrich has 30 percent and Mitt Romney has 28 percent. With more than half the precincts reporting in Mississippi, Santorum has 33 percent, Gingrich has 31 percent and Romney has 30 percent.
Caucuses in Hawaii and American Samoa were also on the calendar.
