Darian Locklear, a Junior at Brighton High School, and Julianna Ward-Brown, a Junior at Howell High School, were on their way to hockey practice that night.

The fatal crash happened Tuesday night on I-96 westbound near Williamston Road in Ingham County's Wheatfield Twp. around 5:45pm. Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver lost control of the vehicle before entering the median. The vehicle rolled over multiple times, and hit multiple trees.

Police say the girls were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, and there is no indication that speed or alcohol was a factor. Troopers are still investigating.

Both girls played hockey for Meijer AAA Hockey, ona 16U girls team for Coach Kurt Miller. There will be grief counselors from Ele's Place during the girls' regularly scheduled practice times at The Summit in Lansing.

“As you can imagine, we are all devastated - in shock. There is no guidebook to navigate this kind of tragedy. My heart breaks for their families, their teammates and their friends,” said Tom Berry, Meijer AAA Hockey Director.
