EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) The Perseid meteor shower peaks this weekend. It's one of the best shooting star displays of the year. Perseids are debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which Earth passes through every August.
The best night for viewing in Mid-Michigan will be Saturday. You can expect a decent show on Sunday and Monday night too. John French, MSU Abrams Planetarium said, "Best place to try to observe a meteor shower is really from any really dark location. You want to get away from bright lights of the city, so if you can go out into the countryside somewhere, maybe up north, where the sky is really dark, you'll be able to see shooting stars and more meteors."
Some Michigan state parks are hosting meteors and s'mores events this weekend. You'll need a blanket, lawnchair, and bug spray to enjoy a night of stargazing. Participating parks will stay open later and offer complimentary s'mores and campfires with designated viewing areas. There may be a park entrance fee.
