New charter school opens in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, MIch. (WILX)-- Cole Academy East is a new non-profit charter school now open in East Lansing. News 10's Lora Painter has been following its construction since early this year and spoke with its superintendent about the challenges in getting the campus up and running.
Cole Academy East is initially serving kindergarten to second grade. It will be adding a grade each year, eventually serving students K through 8 in 2023. Also, there are plans for the campus to grow, but that construction does not involve students moving buildings or being disturbed by construction.
Superintendent Brian Shaughnessy said, " When we expand for the fourth and fifth grade wing it's going be totally separate wing-- it will not involve the current building at all."
The six acre site is near East Lansing's border with Dewitt Township and Clinton County.
It is a new campus, but the school's philosophy will follow its older sister Cole Academy in Lansing, which is chartered by Central Michigan University.
