WILX The head of the International Olympic Committee says he isn't surprised by the National Hockey League's decision to pull out of the 2018 Winter Games.
NHL players have represented their countries in every Winter Olympics since 1994. But the league says the owners are tired of shutting the season down for two weeks to allow it.
The Olympic committee says the NHL needs to listen to its players.
"It's in their interests which should count according to our philosophy and this is why at this moment we are feeling so sorry for them," says Thomas Bach of the International Olympics Committee.
Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg thinks there's more to this than the schedule. He thinks the league's owners know the players want to play in the Olympics and are using the 2018 Games to get the union to agree to contract concessions.
