MLK Commission receives $145K check

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission received $145,000 in donations Friday to help the Commission's work to support equality, diversity and social justice.

The donations were from area businesses:
Cinnaire, MacDonald Broadcasting, Jackson National Life Insurance Company, Dean Trailways, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, AT&T, and Lansing Area Federal Credit Union.

The check presentation took place at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 12 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center.

Here's a breakdown of the donations:
Cinnaire, $50,000; MacDonald Broadcasting, $50,000 in-kind support; Jackson National Life Insurance Company, $15,000; Dean Trailways, $10,000 in-kind support; Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, $10,000; and AT&T, $10,000.
LAFCU was recognized for its diversity sponsorship.

The non-profit Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission is comprised of volunteer representatives working to preserving the legacy and teachings of Dr. King, also supporting community agencies, and empowering youth to achieve educational goals.

The Commission hosts the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Luncheon each year. This year's event is Monday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Lansing Center.

Dr. Diane Nash, a pioneer of the nonviolent American civil rights movement., is the keynote speaker. She chaired the first successful campaign to desegregate student lunch counters in Nashville, Tennessee She also helped to coordinate the Freedom Rides to desegregate interstate travel, was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and worked to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
